From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for June 18, 1911:

• “The family of Newton Perry, 1116 New Jersey street, had a close call from being crushed to death last night. During the course of the wind storm a large cottonwood tree standing in front of the house was blown over and fell on top of it. The entire roof was mashed in, but the house being a stone one the walls supported the fallen tree…. It was about 11 o’clock that the accident occurred and the family had just retired for the night when they were aroused by the jar of the tree striking the house. They hastily fled to the outside for safety. No one received a scratch although it was a severe fright for them.”
• “The only loss from the electric storm at Eudora last night was the death by lightning of Henry Hagenbuch’s old white horse, which had been in Eudora so long that it was considered one of the old timers.”
• “At last the girls’ dormitory at K.U. is a reality, that is there will undoubtedly be one soon. This was finally decided yesterday when the Board of Regents of the University agreed to furnish a site for the building on the campus. Of course the plans as yet are very meager and actual work of construction will not begin for some time, but the dormitory is at last a sure thing and other matters will be worked out in their turn.”
