Judge sentences Lawrence woman to 32 months in prison for child sex abuse

A Douglas County judge Friday sentenced a 23-year-old Lawrence woman to serve 32 months in prison for sexually abusing a 14-year-old child.

District Judge Peggy Kittel sentenced Leeanna R. Cheek to concurrently serve 32-month sentences on one count of aggravated indecent liberties with a child and indecent liberties with a child.

Cheek had pleaded guilty to the two counts in January. According to Douglas County District Attorney Charles Branson’s office, Lawrence police detectives began investigating the case in February 2010 after they were contacted by the Kansas Department of Social and Rehabilitation Services about possible sexual abuse of the 14-year-old child.

Prosecutors then filed charges after they determined Cheek was involved in a sexual relationship with the child while living with the victim and her mother. Amy McGowan, a chief assistant district attorney, prosecuted the case.
