Judge sentences Lawrence woman to 32 months in prison for child sex abuse

June 17, 2011

A Douglas County judge Friday sentenced a 23-year-old Lawrence woman to serve 32 months in prison for sexually abusing a 14-year-old child.

District Judge Peggy Kittel sentenced Leeanna R. Cheek to concurrently serve 32-month sentences on one count of aggravated indecent liberties with a child and indecent liberties with a child.

Cheek had pleaded guilty to the two counts in January. According to Douglas County District Attorney Charles Branson’s office, Lawrence police detectives began investigating the case in February 2010 after they were contacted by the Kansas Department of Social and Rehabilitation Services about possible sexual abuse of the 14-year-old child.

Prosecutors then filed charges after they determined Cheek was involved in a sexual relationship with the child while living with the victim and her mother. Amy McGowan, a chief assistant district attorney, prosecuted the case.

32 months? That's a joke... if she was a male offender it would have been much higher. How about some equality in sentencing?

Its like the sexist motto that all men are guilty on child support, but never the woman.

So if I get two parking tickets in the same day, can I just pay for one and have them be payed "concurrently"?

peace46 2 years, 10 months ago

LJW - Is she serving one 32 month sentence or two? "CONCURRENTLY serve 32-month SENTENCES on one count of aggravated indecent liberties with a child and indecent liberties with a child."

You are correct Informed , "Cheek was involved in a sexual relationship with the child while living with the victim and HER mother."

Myth: Female sex offenders only abuse males

FACT: Female sex offenders sexually abuse males and females, usually children and adolescents. Various studies have shown different rates for which gender is most frequently sexually abused by females. Finkelhor et al. (1988) found that female sex offenders tended to victimize both genders equally. Vandiver and Walker (2002) found that females were the victims 55% of the time. Elliot (1993) also found that females were more likely to be victims of other females.

What a sordid, dishonest, unsafe- for- decent humanity place, and the vindictive judges and dishonest prosecutors and conflict--of-interest law enforcement certainly don't help any.

Unless I'm reading incorrectly, this appears to be the case of a 23-year old woman with a 14-year old girl.

@shepreceds, yeah i'm sure in all the cases of female teachers having sex with students it was done only because a male principal forced her. While it is more uncommon for a woman to perform these crimes it is far from unheard of. Occassions of woman on child sexual abuse probably go vastly underreported because while it IS abuse often teenage boys won't consider it to be abuse and won't report it.

Absolutely! It's a completely obvious fact supported by all the research by NOW. Women are always innocent and men are always guilty. The offense doesn't make any difference.

honestone 2 years, 10 months ago are probably right. Men are pigs. A woman would never do that...would she?

ShePrecedes 2 years, 10 months ago

I still tend to believe the woman's innocence, while I never did get the facts on the case.

99% of all child molesters are men. It is highly unusual for a woman to sexually molest a child, unless these is somehow a man in the picture, ... either collaboratively, financially or forcing it to happen.

This is extremely unusual, if indeed she did it all alone.
