40 years ago: Construction truck catches fire

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for June 16, 1971:

A dramatic photo showed a 1966 dump truck in the process of being destroyed by fire on a recent afternoon. The truck, owned by the Meier Trucking Co. of Topeka, had caught fire as the truck was near 15th and Iowa. The cause of the fire, which had started in the cab of the vehicle, was still undetermined. The truck was being used on a street construction project west of Iowa on 15th. Strangely, another Meier truck had burned a few days earlier, with the same damage amount of $2,500 listed by firefighters, and with the earlier fire also of an undetermined origin.

Many Lawrence residents showed up at a recent city commission meeting to protest the construction of sidewalks along both sides of Crestline from 15th Street to Yale Road and along one side of Stratford Road, Oxford Road and Orchard Lane. The commissioners voted unanimously to move ahead with the project in spite of the objections.
