40 years ago: Relations still rocky between police, community

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for June 15, 1971:

  • Both the Lawrence Police-Community Relations Steering Committee and the Menninger Foundation, Topeka, issued reports on this date in which their members concluded that Lawrence still faced problems of “alienation, discrimination and lack of understanding.” The two groups had worked together in a 10-week program, sponsored by the Lawrence City Commission, for police-community relations.
  • Recent heavy rains had brought the level of Perry Lake to 891.5 feet above sea level, and water conditions were listed as murky. More than a million people had sought out the new lake for recreational purposes during the previous summer, and officials were expecting about 1.5 million visitors for 1971.
