40 years ago: Local man dies of apparent heroin overdose

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for June 14, 1971:

  • A 19-year-old Osawatomie man who had arrived in Lawrence two days earlier was pronounced dead on arrival at Lawrence Memorial Hospital on the previous evening. Douglas County Attorney Mike Elwell said that the cause of death was apparently an overdose of heroin. The man had been staying at an apartment house at 1309 Ohio, according to statements given to police by the persons who had taken his body to LMH.
  • According to the agenda published in today’s newspaper, the Lawrence City Commission was to consider the construction of sidewalks along both sides of Crestline from 15th Street to Yale Road. Commissioners were also considering a request by the Chamber of Commerce for a sidewalk bazaar to be held on June 22.
  • Children were attending the first week of day camps offered by the city. Youngsters in the 5-to-8-year-old bracket were pictured playing a rousing game of Red Rover in Centennial Park.
