From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for June 13, 1971:
- The 272 participants in Haskell Indian Junior College’s dormitory training program had prepared a list of recommendations to upgrade employee training and the dormitory programs. They included additional training for instructional aides and night attendants; funding for additional staff to change the 200-to-one ratio often existing to a more favorable 30-to-one ratio; hiring a security guard and a recreation officer for dormitories; and initiating a required course in drug and alcohol education. These suggestions and many others were to be forwarded by Haskell to the BIA for consideration by the area education director.
- During the final stages of a recent evening rainstorm, local residents were treated to “one of the most spectacular and complete rainbows to show up around here in a long time.” The giant semi-circle was clear and colorful over its entire arc, with a secondary rainbow also visible in some parts of the city.
