From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for June 11, 1971:

• The Lawrence Parks and Recreation Department announced an innovation in summer playground activities. A “mobile playground,” which was a van packed with sports equipment, was to move from spot to spot around the city on a regular schedule. The “playground” was to include tether ball, box hockey, balls and bats, a ping-pong table, Foosball, chess, checkers, and other games. Other playground programs and day camps were scheduled to begin this week, and a hot lunch program and bus transportation for children were planned for East Lawrence Center, East Heights, Pinckney and Woodlawn schools.
• A photo of an ominous hovering cloud was accompanied by the caption “WHEN WILL IT END? — The only weather Lawrence can seem to get anymore is rain.” One of the heaviest rain showers of 1971 had dumped more than an inch of rain on the Lawrence area on the previous afternoon and evening. The city had also received three-fourths of an inch early that morning. The weather service was predicting rain for tonight and the following four days, with a strong chance for locally severe thunderstorms.
