Police arrest 20-year-old Lawrence man on sex crime charges

June 9, 2011

Lawrence police Thursday afternoon arrested a 20-year-old Lawrence man on allegations he had sexual relations with a minor.

An investigator arrested the man Thursday afternoon in the 1800 block of East 23rd Street on charges of aggravated indecent liberties with a child and criminal sodomy, according to Douglas County Jail records.

Sgt. Matt Sarna, a Lawrence police spokesman, said officers were called June 2 by a parent of a 15-year-old Lawrence girl who alleged the suspect, an acquaintance of the girl, had inappropriate sexual relations with the girl May 21 in northeastern Lawrence.

Officers made contact with the suspect and later arrested him. No injures were reported, and the investigation was continuing, Sarna said.

Douglas County District Attorney Charles Branson’s office will make a decision about filing formal charges in the case.

The suspect was also arrested on a warrant from the Kansas Department of Corrections. According to the KDOC, the suspect had been on parole since February after serving about one year in prison on several theft and burglary convictions in Douglas County.

The Journal-World generally does not identify sex crime suspects unless they are convicted.

As long as Paula Martin is still on the bench he should be able to walk with a 'boys will be boys' defense.

Don't you mean "injuries" and not "injures"?

Is Martin still on the bench?????!!!!!!

I am from across the state, and I am shocked she hasn't been booted yet! She has made some shocking and disgusting rulings. I remember being in town during gatherings to protest against her.

Scattered - Have you EVER seen a Kansas judge not retained by the voters??? I don't think I have. Most people who even take the time to fill that part of the ballot out have no clue if the person does a good job or not. Heck, here you had a judge who had organized opposition to her and was in the news and it couldn't be done.

I think that part of the judgeship is a farce. No one will ever get voted out, they will only be removed if they do something blatently illegal that most of us would go to jail for (not them) and they have upset all the other lawyers and judges and political bosses.

well i be... seems like the parents are making all the noise. obviously the girl knew what she was doing and the man knew what he was doing. right, he should have not been messing w/ the teenager but ,from what i have read, which ain't much, she should have not been messing w/ him. I hope he gets time and i hope that she gets community service. there is no consequence for the young loose girls and i think there ought to be. maybe if she gets in trouble too, she will think twice.

cletus26: The reason the age of consent is 16 in Kansas is that we, the people of Kansas, do not believe children younger than 16 are capable of making an adult decision about whether or not to engage in sexual activities. While it may be comforting to think "young loose girls" lead young and old men down the garden path, the fact is that she is still a child. And unless he is mentally impaired in some significant way, at 20 he knows that it is inappropriate and illegal to have "inappropriate sexual relations" with a child.
