FEC audit identifies campaign finance violations from Kansas GOP in 2007 and 2008

? A federal audit has found three violations of campaign finance laws by the Kansas Republican Party stemming from record-keeping and reporting problems in 2007 and 2008.

But Secretary of State Kris Kobach, who was state GOP chairman for most of that time, said Thursday the problems were technical mistakes, not intentional wrongdoing. A former state GOP treasurer said the party has taken steps to ensure mistakes don’t occur again.

Federal Election Commission officials aren’t saying whether further action will result.

The audit found figures on state GOP reports to the commission were incorrect and that some federal expenses were covered from its state account. Also, a $10,000 corporate contribution, legal under state but not federal law, was improperly deposited in a state GOP federal account.
