Fort Riley ? Soldiers and officers at Fort Riley are celebrating the 94th birthday of the 1st Infantry Division, the oldest and longest-continuously serving division in the Army.

To mark the occasion, the division is celebrating with a cake cutting Wednesday morning at the division headquarters at Fort Riley.

Members of the division’s “Best Ranger” competition will use a sabre to cut the cake with Maj. Gen. William Mayville, commanding general of Fort Riley and the 1st Infantry Division.

The division, known by its trademark insignia as the Big Red One, was formed during World War I and has served in every U.S. war since, with the exception of Korea.

After nearly a decade in Germany, the division and its headquarters returned to Fort Riley in 2006.
