From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for June 5, 1986:

  • About 20 Lawrence residents, among a group who had recently circulated a petition for more traffic controls in their neighborhood, cheered the decision of the Traffic Safety Commission to recommend a traffic light at the intersection of Ninth and Maine. The city commission was to make the final decision at their next meeting.
  • Two men were being charged with second-degree murder in the recent death of a man who had been found shot at Centennial Park after a large outdoor party. Police were not saying whether the shooting had been racially motivated.

I will cheer the decision to install a traffic light or some sort of traffic control that will allow southbound K-10 traffic to make a left onto 6th St. aka Highway 40 at rush hour without waiting for an indeterminate amount of time or taking excessive risks.

And it's not only going to be only "about 20 Lawrence residents," I'm sure that one will be a block party!

There was $192 million approved to complete the South Lawrence Trafficway, which may never be completed anyway, while such an obviously needed improvement is left begging.
