The flood warning for the Kansas River in Lawrence has expired after being in effect all day Friday, according to the National Weather Service.

As of a noon measurement, the water level had decreased to 14.81 feet, several feet below the 18-foot flood stage mark.

On Friday morning, Lawrence city leaders closed Burcham Park, Riverfront Park and the lower portions of Constant Park because the Kansas River breached its banks. The water level crested at 18.62 feet, and began declining Friday evening.

According to city officials, parks open back up once the water level decreases below the flood stage. As of 10 a.m. Saturday, Burcham and Constant Park were open, but Riverfront Park was closed and standing water was visible in the park area.

The Kansas River at Lecompton also reached its flood stage level of 17 feet. The river was above 18 feet Friday afternoon but had declined to 12.6 feet by Saturday morning, according to the National Weather Service.

Jillian Rodrigue, assistant director of Douglas County Emergency Management, warned residents to monitor the media and weather radios in case the forecast changes.
