From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for June 4, 1971:

• One of the largest gifts received up to that time by Kansas University — a bequest of more than $2 1/4 million — was to provide scholarships to “deserving students,” including student-athletes. The gift had been received from the estate of Wichita oilman James Davis Jr., who had died in 1969 after a lengthy illness.
• In the days before registration “stickers” for Lawrence cars, the Douglas County Treasurer’s office had recently begun over-the-counter sales of 1972 license plates for drivers with last names beginning with A through L. New tags could not be purchased until 1970 personal property taxes were paid in full. The new tags featured white lettering on a black background.
• A joint investigation by KU police and the Kansas Bureau of Investigation was underway to find a gunman who had reportedly raped a KU employee in the dimly-lighted stacks of Watson Library. Officers were checking preliminary leads in their search for a white male, 19 or 20 years old.
