100 years ago: Street-car owner to give party for Lawrence children

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for June 1, 1911:

  • “Within a week or two after vacation begins, the school children of Lawrence will be given a free picnic at Woodland park. Victor Emanuel, owner of the street car line, is planning to give a party to all the little folks of Lawrence. He wants to entertain as his guests every little boy and girl who likes to ride on the merry-go-round. Every boy or girl who wants to go will be given a free ticket on the street car to the park and return. They will also be given a free ride on the merry-go-round and another on the roller coaster. Big barrels of lemonade will be provided and the little folks will be welcome to drink all they possibly can.”
  • “Working boldly under the glare of an electric light in a room in which a child slept, the burglar who has been terrorizing the residence section of Lawrence, systematically robbed the home of C. E. Friend, 646 Mass., this morning. He secured about $60 worth of property and went away leaving an electric light burning.”
  • “The Y.M.C.A. swimming pool will be at the disposal of the boys of Lawrence who can not swim for one week without charge. The physical director will give his personal attention to each lad at the regular swimming sessions. This season of free swimming instruction is given in order that every lad in the city will have a good chance to learn how to swim. This chance should not be overlooked by the thoughtful boy or parent.”
