Westar reports record levels in electricity demand

? Westar Energy says the demand for electricity during the summer heat has reached record levels.

The Topeka-based electrical utility also said Friday it was establishing field offices to help customers struggling to pay rising bills.

Westar said in a news release that its systemwide peak reached a record level Wednesday, another day of 100-plus degree temperatures across Kansas. The company said its peak production was estimated at 5,563 megawatts, which is 1.6 percent higher than the previous peak of 5,474 megawatts produced last year.

The Topeka Capital-Journal reported that the company says its power plants and delivery grid have so far met the challenge of increased demands.
