Letters to the Editor

To the editor:

I read Donald W. Collins’ letter (Public Forum, July 25) with a sense of déjà vu. Practically the whole second half — starting with “This type of thinking causes us to lose our spiritual equilibrium and reversed our values” — sounded awfully familiar. Turns out I wasn’t the only one, and that there was a darned good reason for it.

Except for the last paragraph, the entire second half of Mr. Collins’ letter was taken practically verbatim from “The Prayer of Repentance,” which was delivered to the Kansas House on Jan. 23, 1996, by Pastor Joe Wright, who appropriately acknowledged himself that his prayer was a revision of a 1995 prayer offered by Bob Russell at the Kentucky Governor’s Prayer Breakfast.

It’s unfortunate that, while Mr. Collins appropriately attributed quotes to Melinda Henderson and the Bible, he couldn’t do the same for Pastor Wright’s words, particularly in a letter about God and values.

What is Plagiarism?

The Oxford English Dictionary defines Plagiarism as:

The action or practice of plagiarizing; the wrongful appropriation or purloining, and publication as one's own, of the ideas, or the expression of the ideas (literary, artistic, musical, mechanical, etc.) of another.

Plagiarism is the use of the words or ideas of others as though they were the writer's own. Wrongful appropriation or purloining is theft. Plagiarism is stealing. Plagiarism is academic dishonesty, and as such is considered a serious affront to academic integrity.

"What is Plagiarism?"

Ask Joe Biden or Doris Kearns Goodwin. Each is an acknowledged expert on that subject.

Au contraire, mon frere. I was simply answering Mr. Holzwarth's question.

"What is Plagiarism?" Ask the prolific poster on this award-winning website that has a frequent problem with attribution.

Yeah, I assumed everyone was aware of this. You can find a reference at urbanlegends: http://urbanlegends.about.com/library/bl_pastor_joe_wright.htm

It's the type of stuff that floats around as email spam. Just this week in my box: various myths and lies about Social Security and how Democrats constantly break their promises about it, and continuing(!) end of times hyperbole about foreign-born Marxist Obama.

Don't most people with an IQ above 'dunce' just delete this stuff? (Maybe that's why Mr. Collins felt the need to do an end-run and sent it to the LJW - they print any crap.)

Among other Tea Party craziness:

Treating gays like drug addicts, Banning gays from serving on the Supreme Court (who knew this was an issue?) Forcing all immigrants to convert to Christianity (or at least a pseudo version of it) Barring Muslims from erecting any houses of worship

But taking the cake??? Excoriating officials for not stoning whales according to the precepts set down in the Bible. (No you did not misread this!)
