Who needs a swimming pool in this weather.

Brilliant! Because December or May just would make no sense whatsoever!

Actually, it's probably just as heavily used in other times of the year, maybe more so, and the outdoor pool isn't open as an option then.

And what about the pool at Lawrence High? Is it open right now, as well?

I doubt it is as heavily used in December (kids are in school most of the month, and people are dealing with holiday stuff) or May (still cool out, school winding down, people planning graduations, weddings, etc), but it would be interesting if the LJW could get and post data on monthly usage. It seems like it would be a no-brainer to do routine maintenance during periods of least use--whatever time of the year that turns out to be.

Not to mention--if kids can't be taken to the swimming pool on December 23rd, it might be a minor inconvenience. Maybe they could go to one of the many ice rinks in the KC area instead...

But at the height of summer, when cooling activities are at a premium, kids are out of school, and parents would like to take them someplace where they can have a blast and get some exercise but not be in the brutal sun, the pool is a lot more important. It just seems like the timing could be a lot more strategic.

CKN is closed during the summer. The LIAC is extremely busy during Winter months. Ad Astra, Aquahawks, Masters and Free State all use the pool for practice. During the Winter, swimming is the preferred method of exercise for a lot of people.

With all the time they've spent "maintaining" the indoor aquatic center over the years one would think that the locker rooms could be improved. The floors near the showers and near the lockers don't drain properly and water ponds rather than going down the drain. Whoever the orginal contractor was should have been compelled to fix that over a decade ago. None of the "maintenance" projects since have corrected it. This is true in the men's locker room and the family changing rooms. I hope the women's locker room is in better shape.

Also, there has been a lot of talk about building a west side rec center. Why not convert the 2nd floor offices at LIAC to a weight room / treadmill room? The HS gym could be used for pick up games on the weekends and over the summer.

The Indoor Aquatic Center closes in August for maintenance so it can be open and ready for patrons when the outdoor pool closes in late August or early September. The maintenance is the annual routine scheduled refurbishment. If you have maintenance issues, bring them up with the staff or management so that they can be addressed.
