Kansas’ U.S. senators considering debt ceiling proposals

July 21, 2011

— Republican Sens. Pat Roberts and Jerry Moran of Kansas say any proposal to raise the federal debt ceiling must have tax-reform provisions they say will stimulate the economy.

Roberts and Moran both said Wednesday they're studying rival proposals being considered in Congress.

One is a House package to cut spending and force a balanced budget. Moran says the GOP-sponsored plan shows a willingness to raise the debt ceiling, and should not be rejected immediately by the Senate.

Roberts said he was reviewing a plan brokered by six senators that would raise the debt ceiling and cut federal spending. He adds that any package must include tax reform to stand a chance of passing.

If by "considering" you mean waiting to adhere to whatever lame-brained plan the tea party wants, then yes, they are considering plans.

Cut taxes, protect subsidies for big business, and slash anything that helps the poor and middle class. Oh, and cut taxes some more.

What else is there to consider?

Anybody see what's been happening in Minnesota over the last few weeks? That's a consequence of a balanced budget amendment. It sounds good on the bumper sticker, but when you look gets complicated.
