40 years ago: KBI officials, AG conduct 14 overnight drug raids in Kansas

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for July 21, 1971:

At least 46 persons were in custody after 14 early-morning drug raids in 14 Kansas cities. The raids had been coordinated by Kansas Bureau of Investigation director Fred Howard and Atty. Gen. Vern Miller, who had accompanied officers on the Lawrence raid. Arrests were made in Independence and Salina (11 persons each), Lawrence (six arrests), Manhattan and Herington (3 each), two each in Newton, Parsons, and Garden City, and one arrest each in Augusta, Hutchinson, Ottawa and Council Grove. Raids had also been conducted in Junction City, but there had been no reports of arrests there. Officials reported several thousand dollars’ worth of hashish seized in a house near Lawrence, and a large quantity of marijuana in Council Grove. Three warrants had been executed in Lawrence, with one site coming up dry and the other two, located at 320 Fla. and on U.S. 40 about three miles west of the city limits, resulting in arrests and confiscation of drugs.
