25 years ago: Lawrence residents claim to have seen lion

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for July 21, 1986:

  • Several people attending a party in the 700 block of Connecticut had reported to police that they had spotted a female lion at about 1 a.m. Another individual, not at the party, made a separate report of having seen the lion in the same area. Responding officers found no lion and offered the explanation that it had perhaps been a Great Dane.
  • Big Bob’s Used Carpet Shop, Inc., was being sued for $49,124.84 by Winter Properties, the owner of the downtown building that housed the business. The suit claimed that the defendant had failed to make rental payments from December 1985 through July 1986 as well as taxes, insurance costs, utility costs “and other costs to be incurred and determined in the future.” Big Bob’s had successfully challenged the city’s sign ordinance in 1985 when the city had charged that the big red, white, and blue mural on the side of the building constituted a violation of the ordinance.
