Wichita ? A union at aircraft parts maker Spirit AeroSystems is recommending that workers reject the company’s contract offer.

Leaders of the Society of Professional Engineering Employees in Aerospace recommended Tuesday that members reject the 10-year contract proposal. The contract covers about 2,300 technical and professional employees at Spirit.

Union officials Bob Brewer says the contract does not offer enough protection for workers’ salaries, benefits and retirement.

Spirit spokesman Ken Evans says the company believes the contract is a fair offer focused on keeping the Wichita business financially healthy.

The Wichita Eagle reports that the union wants to return to negotiations, rather than strike, if the contract is rejected.

A vote is tentatively scheduled for July 28.
