40 years ago: Intersection of 19th and Iowa to get traffic signal

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for July 20, 1971:

  • After years of taking measurements of the traffic at 19th and Iowa, the city had finally satisfied the state highway department as to the need for a traffic signal at the intersection. A fatal accident at that location in February 1970, which was the third fatality on Iowa Street in just over a year, had spurred new pressure for the traffic signal. The agenda for the upcoming Lawrence City Commission meeting included the consideration of a resolution ordering improvement of 19th and Iowa, including traffic lights and left turn bays.
  • Cool springlike days were in store for the area for a few days as a cold front had moved into the area, bringing low temperatures of 61 degrees. The temperature had risen to only 71 by noon today, with light breezes.
