100 years ago: County officials urge acceptance of new census figures
From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for July 20, 1911:
- “There are only two more days for Lawrence to accept the invitation of the Topeka fair people to send five favorite daughters to Topeka to ride in the float that has been assigned to this city in the semi-centennial parade to be held in Topeka this fall. As yet nothing definite has been done in this matter although it is the general opinion that Lawrence will accept and will have her representative on hand at that time.”
- “The board of county commissioners have no alternative but to reduce the salaries of county officials. The board feels that it has made the final effort to the fullest extent of good business to find out the number of people in Douglas county. There is no warrant for a third enumeration, and the board can only make the cuts pointed out by the law. There has been a good deal of fuss made about the enumeration, but the second one was not sufficient to show up the names that brought our population beyond the 25,000 mark…. Certain it is that every possible effort has been made to show just how many people we have and that fact must be respected. The officers ought to take their cuts with good grace. The public does not like poor losers.”
