25 years ago: Juveniles charged in cemetery vandalism

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for July 19, 1986:

  • Area firefighters were mourning the death of Mark Blair, who had died on July 17 while fighting a house fire in southwest Lawrence. He was the first to die in the line of duty in the Lawrence fire department’s 127-year history. A 21-year-old Lawrence man had been charged with first-degree murder and arson in connection with the fire.
  • Five juveniles had been charged with the February vandalism of Lawrence’s historic Oak Hill Cemetery in February. The first of the five, a 16-year-old male, had been found guilty of desecrating a cemetery, a Class A misdemeanor. A date for the disposition, or sentencing hearing, was still to be set, as were the formal hearings of the other four juveniles. The youths had allegedly knocked down about 80 gravestones on Feb. 16, causing about $7,000 in damages.
