Douglas County commissioners meet Wednesday night to decide whether their urban counterparts should get a chance to decide whether to expand Lawrence’s borders.

County commissioners are scheduled to conduct a public hearing at 6:35 p.m. Wednesday to determine whether annexing 67 acres into the city of Lawrence would prevent the proper growth or development of the area.

The property is between the Kansas Turnpike and Farmer’s Turnpike, about a half mile east of the Kansas Turnpike’s Lecompton interchange.

The property’s owners are seeking annexation so they could market the property — and its access to city services — to potential buyers, who then could redevelop the land to accommodate industrial development. Such development could include manufacturing or warehouse operations.

The Lawrence-Douglas County Planning Commission already has recommended that the property be annexed into Lawrence and rezoned for industrial use. Neither could happen, however, without the county’s blessing.

The county previously cleared the way for two other nearby properties to be annexed into Lawrence and rezoned for industrial use.
