25 years ago: North Lawrence man grows unusually large tomato

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for July 17, 1986:

  • Lloyd Milham, 633 Maple, had grown a possibly record-setting tomato in his North Lawrence back yard. The tomato, from a hybrid Beef Eater seed, had been started in March and was already 2 1/2 pounds in mid-July — quite a size for this early in the season, according to the owner. Milham said that he planned to show the fruit to the officials of the Douglas County Extension before “retiring the tomato to a jar.”
  • Movies showing in Lawrence this week included “Top Gun,” “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off,” “The Karate Kid Part II,” “Running Scared,” “Big Trouble in Little China,” and Disney’s “The Great Mouse Detective.”
