100 years ago: Orchestra at park for dancing, roller skating

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for July 16, 1911:

  • “Owing to the many requests that have come to the office of the park manager it has been decided to resume the Sunday night band concerts and the First Regiment band will give another of its delightful concerts at Woodland Park Sunday night. The people have asked for this and they should turn out for the concert tomorrow night to show their appreciation of the action of the park people. These concerts have been very much enjoyed this summer and the Lawrence boys are giving the city good music…. The park management has announced a new list of attractions at Woodland Park to begin next week. The plans are to have a five piece orchestra at the park every evening during the summer to furnish music for dancing on Tuesdays and Thursdays and roller skating the other evenings. The regular moving pictures will be continued free of charge.”
  • “A motion was carried for the city engineer and city clerk to get prices on an adding machine for the city. This is one thing that it is said the city has been needing for some time and the matter of securing a machine for the city will be pushed by those behind the proposition.”
