Cooling centers open throughout Kansas

? With temperatures approaching triple digits, Kansas health officials are reminding residents that cooling centers have been designated throughout the state.

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment and Kansas Department of Aging say libraries, churches or grocery stores can be used as cooling centers. County officials can provide more details.

Health officials say that when soaring temperatures lead to excessive heat warnings, people should check on neighbors, the elderly and family members.

KDHE secretary Robert Moser says the risks heat exhaustion or heat stroke can be minimized and eliminated by taking precautions.

The departments are urging people to stay in air-conditioned settings as much as possible. Those heading outdoors are encouraged to seek some shade, wear sunscreen and drink lots of water.
