Bullwinkle’s granted special use permit

City commissioners cleared the way for a bar in the Oread neighborhood to extend its hours to 2 a.m.

Commissioners unanimously granted a special use permit to Bullwinkle’s, 1444 Tenn.

The special use permit is a requirement before the bar can convert to a cereal malt beverage establishment that must close at midnight to a full liquor-by-the-drink establishment that can stay open to 2 a.m.

Commissioners approved the permit after seeing a new landscaping plan for the bar that adds several mulberry bushes to the area in the front of the establishment. It is hoped that the thorny bushes will dissuade patrons from loitering in front of the bar after closing time.

That's exactly what I was thinking. Maybe they mean blackberry bushes? It's still a stupid idea, but at least it's plausible.

". . . a new landscaping plan for the bar that adds several mulberry bushes to the area in the front of the establishment. It is hoped that the thorny bushes will dissuade patrons from loitering in front of the bar after closing time."

WHAT??!! Mulberries grow on trees without thorns. The trees get tall and what red and purple berries are not eaten by birds and squirrels drop on the ground underneath. Since when is a splotched sidewalk a deterrent to loitering? Drunk kids driving fast have hit drunk pedestrians on this corner. Even sophisticated landscaping and fencing might not always save the day. "Mulberry bushes" is either a stupid mistake or a stupider idea.

Eureka !! 200% of the college students are 21 or older, so why not serve up the hard stuff and install thorny bushes to fall into and pop out of. Win, win, wince

"The special use permit is a requirement before the bar can convert to a cereal malt beverage establishment..."

Before they can convert from one type of establishment. Grammar, do you speak it?
