Explosives to be disposed of this afternoon, may produce loud explosions across eastern Douglas County

Eastern Douglas County residents can expect to hear three loud blasts between 1 and 2 this afternoon.

Ken Keiter, a fire inspector in Johnson County, said a company would be disposing of explosives at the former Sunflower Army Ammunition plant, near De Soto.

“They’ll likely be loud,” he said.

Local fire crews will monitor the blasts, but Keiter said the noise should be the only effect of the blast.

The blasts are also expected to be audible in western Johnson County as well.
