Scouting news for July 9, 2011

Venture Crew 2055, chartered to Westside Presbyterian Church, recently completed a Philmont Scout Ranch Trek. On the way to Philmont, the crew visited Capulin Volcano and Sugarite State Park in northeast New Mexico. The crew reported to Philmont Scout Ranch on June 8 as Crew 608A for a 10-day trek into the back country. Crew 608A was the first crew in to the back country for the summer season. Venture Crew Scouts participating were Michael Heschmeyer, Ben Maloun, Clayton Pfeifer, Jacob Pfeifer and Joe Waisner. Venture Crew advisers participating were Bryce Baringer, Mike Maloun, John Pfeifer and Chuck Remboldt. The crew did Trek 18, hiking 68 miles. Highlights were climbing Trail Peak 10,250 feet; Mt. Phillips, 11,736 feet; Comanche Peak, 11,303 feet; Shaefers Peak, 9,413 feet; and The Tooth of Time, 9,003 feet. Other activities they participated in were visiting the crashed B24 near the summit of Trail Peak, tie cutting and spar pole climbing at Crater Lake, horseback riding, a chuck wagon meal at Beaubien, homesteading at Crooked Creek, black powder rifle shooting and blacksmithing at Black Mountain, rock climbing and rappelling at Cimarroncito, and a side hike of Hidden Valley. The crew also did a cabin tour of Waite Phillip’s Hunting Lodge and a tour of the Kit Carson museum and Waite Phillips Villa. All participants earned the Arrow Head patch along with the Duty to God and Wilderness Pledge Achievement. The crew returned to Lawrence on June 20.
