40 years ago: Organizers urge KU classified employees to unionize
From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for July 7, 1971:
- Public Service Employees Union Local 1132 was making an effort to organize classified employees at Kansas University. Union representatives were distributing flyers urging classified employees to attend an organizational meeting. KU Chancellor Laurence Chalmers, while expressing concern about the low wages paid to classified employees, objected to the use of “half-truths and misinformation” being used by the union.
- Dr. W. F. Bradley, a veterinarian, and John H. Spearman Sr. had been elected president and vice-president of the Lawrence Board of Education at a recent meeting. Dr. Kenneth Anderson, Mrs. Alan Hack and Richard Holzmeister were joining the board as new members, while Dr. Helen Gilles and Larry Hatfield were holdover members.
