Lawrence police were busy responding to 194 firework-related calls during the long holiday weekend, but officials said no fires or other problems were reported.

Sgt. Matt Sarna, a Lawrence police spokesman, said officers were dispatched to the 194 firework-related calls between noon Friday and 8 a.m. Tuesday. Fireworks in the city are prohibited except for a few smaller novelty items, such as sparklers.

The number of calls this year was on par with previous years. Sarna said officers over the same time period around the Fourth of the July holiday responded to 179 calls in 2010, 198 in 2009 and 190 in 2008. The maximum penalty for violating the city’s code is a fine up to $200, but information about the number of firework-related citations was not available Tuesday.

Fire marshal James King, a Lawrence Douglas County Fire and Medical division chief, said no firework-related fires were reported in the county during the holiday weekend. King said police did confiscate illegal firework items in the city, and fire and medical helped dispose of the items safely.

In Eudora, a man injured his hand in a fireworks-related accident Saturday night in the 800 block of Acorn Street, said Sgt. Tom Willis, a Eudora police spokesman.

A Lawrence man also suffered hand injuries June 28 in an apparent fireworks related incident at a rural Baldwin City residence. He was treated and later released from Kansas University Hospital in Kansas City, Kan., a hospital spokesman said. Sheriff’s officers had forwarded information to prosecutors for a decision about any formal charges.
