Lawrence Humane Society takes in lower number of stray dogs despite noisy holiday weekend

The Lawrence Humane Society was quiet last weekend — with only seven stray dogs showing up at the shelter.

“The warm outdoors and the fireworks combined usually make them bolt, but we did not have an excess of stray dogs,” said Dori Villalon, the society’s executive director.

Seven strays is about average, she said.

“It really shows how responsible dog owners are becoming,” Villalon said.

Meanwhile, the shelter’s free cat adoption program led to 154 adoptions in June which is up 73 percent from June 2010. The free adoptions were instituted because of a high number of stray cats at the shelter.
