From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for July 2, 1971:

• With a draft extension bill pending in Congress, young men turning 18 were being instructed that they had to continue to register with their local draft boards. Mrs. Edith Cordell, executive secretary for Lawrence’s Selective Service Local Board No. 18, said that all classification action and physical examination and induction notices had been suspended during the bill’s progress through Washington. The federal government’s authority to induct had expired at midnight.
• A thirteen-mile section of I-35 north of Wichita had been opened to traffic on the previous day. The section extended from I-235 at the north edge of Wichita north to K196 in Harvey County. With this new addition, Kansas now had 710 of its allotted 820 miles of interstate roads open to traffic.
