Kansas City car dealer sentenced for aiding drug traffickers

? A northeast Kansas auto dealer has drawn a 30-month prison term for helping drug dealers hide purchases of vehicles from law enforcement.

Thirty-nine-year-old Jon Lenie, of Overland Park, was sentenced Thursday in U.S. District Court in Kansas City, Kan. He pleaded guilty earlier to one count of conspiracy to engage in money laundering

Lenie worked at Shawnee Auto Sales in the Johnson County town of Shawnee. Prosecutors said he admitted selling vehicles to drug traffickers for cash and making false reports on the transactions to the state and the Internal Revenue Service.

The scheme involved cash purchases of cars by people who Lenie knew were drug dealers. He then wrote up paperwork listing the purchase prices at well below the level that requires filing reports to the IRS.
