Love 2 Run run slated: The second-annual “Love 2 Run” four-mile couples run/walk will start at 9 a.m. on Feb. 12 at Free State High. Participants can enter as a couple for the team competition or as individuals. Couples/teams don’t have to run together; results will be scored on total combined time. Pi-Day River run on tap: The Lawrence Trail Hawks will host the “Pi-Day River Rotation Half Marathon” on March 19 on the Kansas River trail system. The race marks Pi Day, a March 14 holiday held in honor of the mathematical constant 3.1415. The race will be held the first Saturday following Pi Day. The half marathon trail race will begin and end by the Kansas River Trails trailhead, just off Eighth and Oak streets in North Lawrence. There will be an aid station offering water, sports drink and fruit located at the trailhead. Volunteers will serve homemade pie at the finish line. DCABA entries open: Lawrence Parks & Recreation is taking team entries for the upcoming 2011 Douglas County Amateur Baseball Association season. Indoor baseball/softball opening: The Lawrence Indoor Practice Facility will open this month and will be available for team and individual rentals. The facility, which contains 4,000 square feet of turfed practice area and also has hitting cages, is located at 801C Comet Lane in West Lawrence. Private lessons are available. Free State to host fundraiser: Free State boosters will be hosting a fundraiser for the baseball and softball teams from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Feb. 5 at Alvamar Country Club. The event, which is adults only, will include an auction. Auction items include Free State varsity baseball team camp for 30 kids; Royals, Cardinals, Cubs and KU basketball tickets; a night at the Oread Hotel; Alvamar golf package; and much more.

Former KU runner qualifies: Paul Hefferon, a former Kansas University track/cross country runner, qualified for the 2012 U.S. Olympic Trials in 1:04:55 at the Naples half marathon on Jan. 16. Hefferon currently trains with the Hansons Distance Project in Detroit.

Tanner takes two powerlifting victories: Lawrence Special Olympian Brady Tanner, 31, took home two victories on Jan. 23 at the Natural Nationals Championship Meet in Oklahoma City. In the powerlifting meet, which featured athletes from around the country, Tanner claimed two first-place national championships: The first was in power sports, a combination of strict curl, bench press and dead lift. The second was in power lifting, which combines bench press, squats and dead lift. Tanner lifted 160 pounds on the strict curls, 402 pounds on the bench press, 535 pounds on the dead lift and 455 pounds on the squats. Tanner, a member of the Douglas County Special Olympic Jayhawks, will compete in the Special Olympic World Games on June 24 in Athens, Greece.

Reaney earns top performances: Ad Astra Area Aquatics swimmer Emma Reaney earned two top 10 performances in the country recently. Each year, USA Swimming recognizes the top 10 performances by age in each of the competitive events. As noted in Splash Magazine, Reaney had the 10th-fastest 200 individual medley swim in the nation at 2:00.86. She also had the 10th-fastest time in the 200 breaststroke at 2:15.84. Reaney will attend Notre Dame in the fall.

Free State to host baseball camp: Free State’s varsity baseball team will host a baseball camp for 30 youths on Saturday, Feb. 5, from 7-10 a.m. at Alvamar Country Club. There will be a silent auction in a joint fundraising event with the FSHS softball team. KU basketball tickets, a table top grill, a hand-made quilt will also be auctioned.

Titans looking for two more: The Lawrence Titans 14-U Baseball Team is looking for two additional players to round out its roster for the 2011 spring and summer season. The 14-U Titans will play in Lawrence’s Heinrich League and compete in seven to eight area tournaments in Lawrence, Topeka, and Kansas City. Girls Fast Pitch: The Lawrence Parks and Recreation Department is now accepting registration for the 2011 Lawrence Girls Fast Pitch Softball Summer Leagues through April 1. 8-U (Coach Pitch Softball) teams and leagues will be formed by individual registrations from schools and grades. 8-U players must be 8 years old or younger on Jan. 1, 2011. Participation fee is $65. The 10-U, 12-U, 14-U and 16-U Lawrence Girls Fast Pitch Softball Summer Leagues are now taking team registration for the 2011 Season, through April 1. Player’s eligibility is determined by age as of Jan. 1, 2011. Team registration is $900.
