25 years ago: Lawrence residents question need for bypass project

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Jan. 24, 1986:

  • About 100 people packed the Douglas County Commission’s meeting room to witness the latest reports on the proposed Lawrence bypass. Almost two dozen residents spoke at the meeting, with the majority questioning the need for the project and objecting to the issuance of $4 million of bonds without a public vote.
  • Two Wichita men were seeking $4.4 million in industrial revenue bonds in order to buy and renovate the Park 25 Apartments at 2401 W. 25th. Mayor Mike Amyx reiterated his outlook opposing IRBs for projects that competed with other apartment complexes.
  • After nearly nine years’ journey to the edge of the solar system, Voyager 2 was approaching the planet Uranus, about 1.84 billion miles from Earth. The spacecraft had been able to confirm that the planet had a magnetic field. Voyager had been launched on Aug. 20, 1977.
