40 years ago: Collision between school bus, cattle truck

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Jan. 22, 1971:

  • A collision between a Tonganoxie school bus and a cattle truck had occurred at the intersection of K-15 and U.S. 24-40 at the west edge of Tonganoxie. The semi-trailer truck’s driver had failed to stop for the traffic signal, hitting the right front end of the bus and propelling it into a Sinclair service station on the southeast corner of the intersection. Both gasoline pumps were knocked over, and the bus had then crashed into a bedroom of a home immediately east of the service station. No occupants of the home were injured, but several of the students on board the bus had received minor cuts and bruises.
  • Employees at the Sunflower Army Ammunition Plant had recently been advised not to make any major new purchases because of uncertain future employment conditions at the plant. There was some talk among workers that Sunflower might experience a sharp decimation of the workforce by the time current production commitments were to be met in June.
