Lawrence man arrested following disturbance at the Community Building

January 20, 2011, 12:00 a.m. Updated January 20, 2011, 12:01 p.m.

A 22-year-old Lawrence man was arrested on a charge of aggravated assault Wednesday afternoon the Community Building, 115 W. 11th St., after an alleged altercation with a 28-year-old man over a basketball game there.

Sgt. Matt Sarna, a Lawrence police spokesman, said the suspect was accused of retrieving a handgun from his bag and showing it to the 28-year-old man. The suspect then left the building, but police were called and arrested him in the parking lot on charges of aggravated assault and defacing a firearm.

Police did recover a gun, Sarna said. Jail records also list a charge of possession of a stimulant, but prosecutors are expected to make a decision about formal charges Thursday. The Journal-World generally does not name suspects until they are formally charged.

The law (GCA 68)requires that all newly-manufactured firearms produced by licensed manufacturers in the United States and imported into the United States bear a serial number. Firearms manufactured prior to the Gun Control Act and Firearms manufactured by non-FFLs remain exempt from the serial number requirement. Defacement or removal of the serial number (if present) is a felony offense.

Smitty you have been around and involved long enough to know that how a call is dispatched has nothing to do with any laws. The LJW is simply reporting how it was dispatched, then lists what the PD arrested him for.

There is no such charge as "suspicious person" yet those calls are dispatched all the time and if an arrest it made it is a law that is quoted.

Hope your day gets better.

It was called into dispatch as a "domestic disturbance" or a 10-97.

The miscreant put himself in line for some federal charges with the firearms jazz.

Does the "community shelter" now suppliment it's income through the sales of hand guns? While there is a "gun show" in Topeka this weekend, it sure would be easier to just go on down to the "community shelter" to pick up a new "heater."

It was the community building, not the community shelter.

There is a firing range in the basement there. Maybe that's where he was with the gun.
