25 years ago: Abandoned newborn found in Lawrence apartment stairwell

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Jan. 20, 1986:

  • A newborn baby, apparently only a few hours old, had been found abandoned in the stairwell of an apartment complex at 2400 Ala. The male infant had been taken to Lawrence Memorial Hospital and was reportedly in good condition. Police and the local office of the Kansas Social and Rehabilitation Services were investigating.
  • Some Lawrence residents were reporting symptoms of a “false spring” as their crocuses, tulips and peonies had begun showing signs of life. The recent warm weather was triggering some early growth, but the balmy conditions were not expected to last much longer.
  • In France, President Francois Mitterand and British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher today announced that a $6.8 billion railroad tunnel would be built under the English Channel, linking the two countries. (The “Chunnel” began construction two years later and opened in 1994.)
