Lawrence police adding features to website, including crime map

The Lawrence police department Thursday plans to make public its new website that includes a map of all crimes reported in the city in 2010.

“Citizens will be able to go in and look at a certain area and see exactly what type of crime has occurred there,” said Matt Sarna, the department’s public affairs sergeant.

The online crime map will include burglaries, batteries, thefts, liquor violations, sexual assaults and weapons violations.

The department has entered the data from 2010, and officers will have access to the map when they respond to calls in neighborhoods. That way they can check for trends, Sarna said.

Department staff members have worked for months on the new website. Police Thursday announced the new website address as www.lawrenceks.org/police.

The department also plans to seek help from the public by listing people who have two or more outstanding warrants for arrest and posting announcements about stolen vehicles.

Members of the public can also leave compliments for officers online or download paperwork to send in complaints.

The website will still include public access to PDF copies of offense and accident reports.

“We want to be more accountable and visible to the public,” Sarna said about the website’s overhaul.

As for the crime map, Sarna said staff members plan to work on mapping past years as well and, it is hoped, update it weekly or almost daily for the current year.
