100 years ago: Lawrence fire department to choose between additional fire station or new ‘automobile fire wagon’

From the Lawrence Daily World for Jan. 19, 1911:

  • “Would it be more economical for Lawrence to purchase an automobile fire wagon or to establish another fire station? This is a question which the Merchants Association is trying to solve. The present headquarters are very centrally located, but on long calls to the city limits, so much time is consumed in making the run that a blaze gets under great headway before the arrival of the fire fighters. An automobile truck, capable of making forty to sixty miles an hour, would enable the firemen to reach any section of the city within a minute or two after receiving the alarm.”
  • “A bill discharging the Board of Regents of the University, as well as those of all other state coeducational institutions, was introduced in the House this morning at Topeka. The bill was framed by Representative Armstrong and creates a Department of Education to control all institutions as mentioned.”
  • “Fearing that the stray dog which had severely bitten Willie Curby in the face might have rabies, it was killed and the brain sent to the clinical hospital in Kansas City. If the brain tissues show symptoms of hydrophobia, the little boy will be rushed to the Pasteur Institute in Chicago.”
