Baker University, Baldwin City

— Multiple gunshots were reported outside a campus dormitory on Baker University's campus early this morning, according to Baker University spokesman Steve Rottinghaus and Baldwin City Police. No injuries were reported.

Up to five shots were reported by resident assistants at Irwin Hall around 3:30 a.m. Sunday. The shots were fired outside into the north end of Irwin Hall, which is a campus dormitory that was housing 28 students at the time of the shooting, Rottinghaus said.

Campus isn't open Monday in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, but Rottinghaus says he expects classes to resume at regularly scheduled times on Tuesday.

Increased round-the-clock security patrols will continue on campus, he said.

"The safety of our students is our top priority and we will continue to assist law enforcement officials in their investigation," Rottinghaus said.

Baldwin City Police Sgt. Mike Underwood said the case was still under investigation and no further details were available.

Check for updates as they become available.

I live about 1.5 blocks from there and I didn't hear anything last night. I'm a fairly light sleeper, too. Perhaps it was the teenage boys in the house immediately to the north of the dorm lighting off fireworks in their backyard that backs up to the back side of the dorm. Them boys is always creatin' a ruckus.

Just teenage boys with friends that stop by every now and again. Never seen 'em cause any problems, but it's always considered proper to blame the local teenagers.

ronwell_dobbs, Just got off the phone with Baldwin City PD and Baker spokesman. Sounds like the shots went into the building, so not fireworks, etc.

Just took a peek down there and the presence of a board in the window of the rear entry door to the dorm probably means that the shots knocked out the window. If I remember correctly that was entry-proof glass, so I'm not thinking a BB or pellet gun would take out that type of glass.

Here we go again. Rednecks, Baldwin. Where do these goofy stereotypes come from? You folks crack me up.

Baldwin has a lively arts community a nationally recognized small college and is a lovely friendly town. Until a few years ago it was a dry (no liquor) town.

It maybe hard to imagine but many Baldwin residents work and shop in Lawrence. Baldwin is also in Douglas County.

Shardwurm 7 years, 1 month ago

Don't forget the highest tax rate in all of Douglas County and an albatross of a school bond issue that your great grandchildren will be paying.

seeker must visit the greater Vinland/Baldwin area sometime. Bet he doesn't even know about Vinland International Airport.

Still laughing over the normal Baldwin sat. night comment. Had to pick up a home repair item at Baldwin's Arrowhead Hardware today. What a nice treat this place is, if you don't leave with a smile your not pumping fluids.

On the way back noticed you can see Lawrence buildings at the top of Baldwin Hill. You can actually see Lawrence from Baldwin. Where does the cultural difference begin? CHW 458?

When did KU athletes move into Baker dorms?

Steve Jacob 7 years, 1 month ago

Do Baldwin people blame Ottawa/Lawrence people for shootings?

Good thing he didn't opt to more fully utilize his 2nd Amendment "militia" rights by emptying a 31-shot clip into the dorm without having to reload.

The reports I heard were that there were 4 bullet holes found in a wall.

KCTV 5 reported at 7:30 this morning that 5 shots were fired through a door on the ground floor. Late to the game with half the story, typical for LJWorld.

I still remember the house that always gave me a toothbrush for Halloween. My plot has been forming for 25 years......(insert evil laugh)

I live in Baldwin and I see the stars and bars a lot on plates so maybe the billy burbia thing sticks. We had a lock and load state representative recently elected by the enlightened citizens in the country between here and Ottawa so go figure.

mommie2boogie 7 years, 1 month ago

@tuschkahouma... LMAO I love your comment "lock n load state rep" wonder if she will put crosshairs on all the houses of the people who voted against her.

And another thing, even though the median income is higher here, that still does not mean anything! LOL I have lived in Baldwin my whole life, and money.. doesnt mean a dang thing

friendlyjhawk 7 years, 1 month ago

So typical of these anonymous posters to make fun of a serious incident. After what we have experienced so recently in Arizona, violence has touched Kansas. Shame on you people who make a joke out of this.

ronwell_dobbs 7 years, 1 month ago

Well I'm afraid its the new State Rep. that has made a joke out of us. People refer to her as "lock and load" because she made that comment in reference to attempting to overturn the new healthcare law in a public debate last October.

I am happy no one was hurt. Too much talk about how guns aren't a problems and not enough talk about how dangerous playing with guns is. I find drunk driving a good analogy, in my youth you got a slap on the wrist for dui. Now it is considered serious offense, People stood up and demanded the community to take it seriously. If you are for or against gun control, at least stand up and shout, how you feel about gun play.
