Goddard doctor asks judge to set aside sentence for prescribing painkillers

? A Kansas doctor sentenced to two years in prison for unlawfully prescribing a painkiller to a woman he never met wants the judge to set aside his sentence.

Dr. Lawrence Simons, of Goddard, claims in a document filed Thursday that his lawyer never advised him he could permanently lose his medical license. He also claims his attorney should have asked for a lower sentence.

Simons was sentenced last year for two counts of prescribing Fentanyl for the woman in 2007 and 2008.

He had argued that he received no money for the unlawful prescriptions, which he wrote after being fired from the Haysville clinic of Dr. Stephen Schneider.

Schneider was sentenced to 30 years in prison and his wife, Linda, to 33 years in a separate case.
