40 years ago: ‘Phog’s Liniment’ once again available at Lawrence pharmacies

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Jan. 12, 1971:

  • The Kansas State Architect’s Office had issued invitations for bids on construction of the proposed four-story Kansas University building to be known as Wescoe Hall. The $8 million building was to house humanities departments which were scattered around the KU campus at that time. The site for the proposed structure was that which had been previously occupied by old Robinson gymnasium and old Haworth Hall, which had housed the biological sciences. Both had been deemed obsolete and had been razed.
  • During his career at KU, Dr. Phog Allen had developed a “highly effective” liniment called Salbenthol. It had been widely used, but since Allen’s retirement in 1957 it had begun to disappear. Local business operator Emory Scott recently had attempted to get it from local pharmacies, but he had been told that the supplier, Dow Chemical, had pulled it off the market. A sales manager for Dow later offered the formula to Scott, free of charge, and Scott distributed it to Lawrence pharmacists, who were now able to make “Phog’s Liniment” available to all once again.
