jhawks1234 7 years, 5 months ago

Better run to the panic room while you can!!!! The Mayans were right, the Mayans were right! Everybody hide!

TikiLee 7 years, 5 months ago

Yes, obamarocks. You have been very clear about that.

For days now.

Very. Clear.

Sunny Parker 7 years, 5 months ago

Bunch of mambi pambi whimpy kids and parents!

Steve Bradt 7 years, 5 months ago

Back in the day, we figured that if the plows made it past the Superintendent's house so he could get his Lincoln out of the driveway, school was on.

Carol Braden 7 years, 5 months ago

Pretty funny, since my dad drove a Lincoln, also. But, back in our day, the way we knew school was canceled was if Don Shepard was in our kitchen drinking coffee with our dad. He'd do his trial bus run and stop at our house for coffee on his way home.

yellowdot99 7 years, 5 months ago

Mr. Shepard still drives school bus for Lawrence schools, I work with him everyday. He and his beautiful wife are the best team at First Student. Boy does he have great stories about the good old days.

Carol Braden 7 years, 5 months ago

Please tell him Bob & Alice Pulliam's daughter says "hi"!

crimsonlaugh 7 years, 5 months ago

No kidding. The roads are fine if you're not going 60 mph and you're not an idiot.

Well, I guess that leaves out a lot of people...

Caleb Schletzbaum 7 years, 5 months ago

hope kids dont have to go to school in the bitter temps tommorrow

Sunny Parker 7 years, 5 months ago

Of course Lawrence will close all schools. Run for your lives it is snowing!

LadyJ 7 years, 5 months ago

Snowplow the streets around the schools so parents can drop the kids off if there is going to be school, common sense. For heavens sake people, don't stop all of a sudden on 19th street to drop your kids off at Cordley because Vermont isn't snowplowed. If I remember correctly, New York school was another school where the street wasn't cleared for parents.

justforfun 7 years, 5 months ago

George Williams way and Langston Hughes were looking good at last check. :)

Matt Torres 7 years, 5 months ago

Forecast for Tuesday morning shows the temperature actually going down from 14 degrees at 5am to 8 at 9am with a 20 mph wind out of the North.

This isn't just about snow, it's about cold.

Also, enough with the cane-waving "we had to walk uphill in the snow both ways" stuff. Yes're very tough. yawn Now can we talk about this realistically? If anyone has a serious critique of the way Lawrence Schools decide to close, go ahead.

fu7il3 7 years, 5 months ago

"Snow and ice — not subfreezing temperatures and blustery wind — are the dominant conditions that figure into his decision, he said.

“Cold is a factor, but only as it relates to whether it’s combined with moisture,” Doll said.'

From the article on this very same site about how Doll decides to close schools.

conservative 7 years, 5 months ago

School closings should be decided by how safe the roads are in lawrence. Temp shouldn't be a factor, kids have coats and few have to spend time outside other than walking from the car to the school. Also the county roads should not be a factor as 99% of students are inside the city limits. And most importantly, if a majority of kids can make it to school they should be open. For anyone who thinks the temps are too cold or the roads unsafe you always have the option of keeping your kids home.

kernal 7 years, 5 months ago

I'm not so sure all kids have coats. Driving in to Lawrence, I've seen kids on the East side walking without coats when the temperature was in the fortys. Saw one today with a long sleeve tshirt and a short sleeve tshirt over that, no hat, no gloves.

musiclife 7 years, 5 months ago

Well, at the same time with the wind being so strong, visibility is a possible problem since the snow that fell is so powdery.

queen 7 years, 5 months ago

Interesting how the safety of children is over shadowed by ego. Get over yourselves. If it's too cold or snowy, kids shouldn't be walking the 2 + miles to school if their families cannot drive them and the district won't pay for the buses. Not rocket science.

dragonfly0221 7 years, 5 months ago

They need to cancel and do it tonight so parents can make what ever arrangements they need. This waiting till 6 AM when every other district around us has canceled already is ridiculous. Give parents the time they need and they complain less........hint

Matt Torres 7 years, 5 months ago

The district's website is crawling a bit...wonder how many people are hitting the "refresh" button tonight!

jhawkinsf 7 years, 5 months ago

you're correct, I can't get their web site to come up.

Rae Smith Evans 7 years, 5 months ago

every district around us is canceled already. I don't just mean the small districts or rural. Topeka, Olathe, Shawnee Mission, KCMO and North Kansas City have closed. From experience of working in the SM and Olathe districts, they don't like to all. I can't even believe how many days we had to work that I felt sooooo bad for the kids that had to be outside waiting for buses, walking or whatever. They were so cold and miserable.

Wendy magillicutty 7 years, 5 months ago

You assume that the car stays on the road and warm. You assume that the school heater continues to work properly. You assume that a child will not fall down and injure themselves (on snowy or icy sidewalk/roadway). You assume too much. Anyone care to quote how fast hypothermia or frostbite sets in?

fu7il3 7 years, 5 months ago

In all fairness, all of those things can easily happen any day. You might as well just keep your kids in a padded room from November to April.

Rae Hudspeth 7 years, 5 months ago

Well, I still won't be driving this for quite some time, lol.

And if the schools are open, I'll be leaving early and going the long way round to work, because some of the parents dropping off their kids drive stupidly enough in the GOOD weather.

Please, .. hang up the damned cell phone and watch your kids and the road! You'll get there a lot later if you end up in a wreck due to inattention.

tomatogrower 7 years, 5 months ago

Guess what. If the kids don't have to go to school, then there are fewer people out on the roads while those who have to go to work are trying to manage the roads. It's really a win/win situation, except for those parents who have to deal with daycare. I think some people are just jealous.

mdrndgtl 7 years, 5 months ago

Growing up, we knew school was canceled when Bob MacAdoo broke through the door and punched my father in the groin.

kseagle 7 years, 5 months ago

LOL.....even the school district is learning not to trust our road crews to do their job of clearing the roads.....this should be a large slap in the face of the city.......

Sheila Hooper White 7 years, 5 months ago

Really. You don't think those guys have been working. It hasn't stopped snowing. Maybe you should talk to one of the guys who works for the street crews and has to do this job. It's not a simple as you think. I believe until someone knows or has ever had to do their job, you can't complain. These people are working hard to get the roads cleared as quickly as possible. Give them a break. Geez.

BruceWayne 7 years, 5 months ago

the delay is Coreless paying to gave a study done to see if we need a study done to see if the roads are bad enough to clear.

overthemoon 7 years, 5 months ago

WHAT is going on in that photo?? Was there measureable kid-fall last night and that poor man has to shovel up the little ones in pink coats?? And He just flung her off the shovel like a pile of snow?? Somebody out to investigate!!

Sunny Parker 7 years, 5 months ago

No school...all the little kiddies will be out sledding in the dreadful temps and snow.

What is this world coming to? You are all raising a bunch of pansy kids!

seth5792 7 years, 5 months ago

Wow for a change we aren't finding out school is cancelled at 7am......At least we can prepare for it now

Raymond Munoz 7 years, 5 months ago

The Douglas County Dental Clinic will be closed in the morning. We hope to have our doors open by 1pm for our afternoon patients. Please follow our Twitter feed @dentalclinic for the latest updates. Thank you!

wmathews 7 years, 5 months ago

Hi Raymond! I'll add this to the story, but let me know if you close for the afternoon at Thanks!

Sunny Parker 7 years, 5 months ago

Kids can play outside all day....but parents don't want them to go to school!

Boston_Corbett 7 years, 5 months ago

Yup, nothing like a snow storm where parents complain about travel to schools so that they can instead travel their children to retail outings.

jhawks1234 7 years, 5 months ago

It's about nutrition, these kids need nourishment to survive the cold temps outside when playing in the snow. What is better than a fried piece of dough covered in sugar? I mean, whats the harm in that?

Boston_Corbett 7 years, 5 months ago

I guess you can "treat your kids" however, whenever, you want.

But you don't run the district, or the education of other children. Your frequent posts criticizing the district for having school when the weather is only marginal are offensive to some others.

You can keep your children out of school when you want. But don't complain when they are behind in class, or miss other opportunities.

To complain about their safety in traveling to school, only to take them on retail outings is pretty hypocritical. Your argument about "treats" is idiotic.

I just talked to an official at KU who says KU is NOT closed. Business as usual.

dogsandcats 7 years, 5 months ago

Hey guess what? People work at places other than KU too you know. Places which never close. What are those parents supposed to do?

jhawks1234 7 years, 5 months ago

Daycares? Older babysitters who also have the day off and want to make some extra money?

Hilltop Child Care Center on campus is open.

hip_gma 7 years, 5 months ago

Gilmore - in the future, call 864-SNOW. By 6:20am the message was that campus was open today.

Teri Chambers 7 years, 5 months ago

The KU Alert page didn't update to say KU was open until around 7:30.

pace 7 years, 5 months ago

I just got this message Postponed: New York's 1/11 MLK Chili Feed New York Elementary's annual MLK Chili Feed has been postponed until 5:30-7 p.m. on January 18 at New York school. The public is welcome. I hope it is accurate. A big event, not to be listed.

earthmomma 7 years, 5 months ago

Seriously? Were you a hall monitor in school, by chance?

BJ Adema 7 years, 5 months ago

The 17 people on obamrocks' list need to move the snow from the sidewalk in front of their houses to hers. Then call in at 8:01am tomorrow and leave her address. : )

Laura Wilson 7 years, 5 months ago

It's actually 8:01 on Thursday. 48 hours, not 24. Learn to read the articles and, you know, maybe get a heart and become a decent person. There's nothing slick about this snow. Sidewalks with snow on it are better than frozen slush/ice from shoveling.

I grew up here. I went to school when it was icy, when it was below zero, when there was a foot of snow. Somehow we all managed to survive and we also got our butts out and shoveled for our neighbors and earned a few bucks!

lady_bug 7 years, 5 months ago

feel free to ring my doorbell and offer to shovel the city sidewalk. i have a car and will be using it and not the sidewalk to get where i need to go.

earthmomma 7 years, 5 months ago

Yes, PLEASE go back JC soccer mom snobs. I'm tired of the dirty and uncomfortable looks you give me (you know who you are) when I nurse my daughter in MY car in the parking lot of our preschool. Oh, and I've also heard the things you've whispered about me to the other moms. Get back in your SUV's and go back to Suburbia where everyone is white and Christian and fits into your narrow-minded conformist views.

Jamminalive 7 years, 5 months ago

You tell em, earthmomma, they can't take it.

Rae Smith Evans 7 years, 5 months ago

I hope school is canceled one more day. Its too cold for the kids to be outside. If they don't, I'll be exercising my right to keep mine home on an inclement day. Its way too cold to be out there walking.

lady_bug 7 years, 5 months ago

Kudos to Dr Doll for keeping kids off the street when the roads are not safe. I hope that everyone that wanted to keep the "neighborhood schools" open so that their student could attend school by their house decides to walk their child to school tomorrow when the temperatures are so low. those that are two miles away and do not have a car because they came from another country to attend KU will be walking their children. good job Lawrence.
