40 years ago: Robert Docking begins third term as Kansas governor

Robert Docking began his third term as Kansas governor with the assertion that “we, together, with faith in ourselves, can promise a better future for our children.”

At that time, Docking was only the second Democrat to have served more than one term as Kansas governor. Vern Miller, former Sedgwick County sheriff, also took oath of office as Kansas attorney general, the first Democrat to serve in that office in 80 years.

Louis Holcom, “widely known area youth worker, farmer, merchant and weather expert,” had died at the age of 77. He had been active in youth baseball programs and was also known as an expert on local weather.

Holcom’s Grove, the area in back of his farm property along Highway 59, had been for years a popular place for picnics and other gatherings. His family requested that memorials be made by donations to the new city baseball field, through the city recreation department.
