40 years ago: Big snowstorm affects Kansas, Missouri; travelers stranded
From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Jan. 4, 1971:
Up to a foot of snow had closed highways and caused three deaths in a fierce storm affecting much of Kansas and the northwestern corner of Missouri. Two high school bands en route home from the Orange Bowl parade in Miami, Fla., had been stranded. The 120 members of the Phillipsburg, Kan., band had made it as far as Concordia before having to spend the night there in private homes. Ninety high school students from Syracuse, Neb., had been stranded with their two buses at Maryville, Mo., where they spent the night at Northwest Missouri State College. Meanwhile, more than 200 motorists were stuck in Hays as Interstate 70 was blocked by snow. The National Guard had opened its facilities to the travelers, as had a dormitory at Fort Hays State College. In Great Bend, the snow had drifted badly from strong winds, and one street was closed by a drift 30 feet wide and 6 feet high.
